On Thursday, May 9th, more than 200 people gathered outside the Peterborough Public Library to protest proposed staffing cuts. The plan would eliminate three full-time unionized librarian positions, including roles focused on children’s programming and community access.
Community members and library staff expressed concern about how the changes could impact programs like Parent-Child Mother Goose, a weekly early literacy group featuring songs, stories, and social time. Laura Murray, the library’s Children’s Librarian, explained that some programs rely on specific staffing models and cannot continue without trained staff.
Protesters gathered to show support for library workers and encourage city officials to reconsider the cuts. The proposed changes have not yet taken effect as discussions continue on the library’s future structure.
