Aging in rural communities comes with both unique challenges and meaningful opportunities. Trent University is at the forefront of understanding what that looks like. Through the Rural Aging Research Program, faculty, students, and community members are working together to explore how older adults age in place, build social connections, and contribute to the resilience of rural life.
One standout initiative is the Intergenerational Classroom, a course led by Dr. Elizabeth Russell that brings together students and older adults to learn, share, and challenge age-based stereotypes. The impact has been lasting. Participants have formed deep friendships, inspired one another, and even returned to school themselves.
The program, co-founded by Dr. Mark Skinner, also addresses rural volunteerism and aging-related policy through collaborative research and resources designed with and for communities.
