An Ontario measles outbreak is causing the highest number of reported cases in recent years but so far, Peterborough appears to be measles free.

Public health nurse with Peterborough Public Health (PPH), Jessica Andrews, told CFFF there are no confirmed active cases of measles in the region.

Andrews calls the MMR vaccine the “best defense” against the virus and urges the public to ensure their vaccines are up to date.

Nathan Koopman, public health nurse with PPH’s immunization program, shared that an individual with two doses of the MMR is “between 97% and 99% effective” at preventing the virus.
