A new pilot program for cleanup and community outreach in the neighbourhood around the Trinity Community Hub administered by social enterprise One City Peterborough was formally approved at City Council on the night of August 31st.
The motion sparked heated debate at general committee the week before but was ultimately recommended 10-1 with the sole dissent of Councilor Andrew Beamer. It passed with the same split at council on the 31st.
City Staff’s report argues the initiative provides “opportunities for individuals who may otherwise be viewed primarily as recipients of services to contribute visibly and meaningfully to their neighbourhood and community,” and “combines meaningful paid employment with practical neighbourhood improvement and relationship-building.”
One delegate, George Horton, spoke against the recommendation on the night of the 31st. Listen to hear clips from council, including Horton’s delegation.
