The night of Tuesday, September 8th at City Hall saw Peterborough City Council’s general committee presented with five properties to be considered for heritage designation.
With Ontario’s January 2027 deadline to designate properties currently on the City’s heritage list looming, there is pressure on council to consider as many properties as possible in the coming meetings.
Councilor Dave Haacke moved to single out every one of the five heritage recommendations from the consent agenda, leaving them open to debate. This came in the form of strong disagreement between Haacke and councilor Joy Lachica about the nature and purpose of heritage designation, in a back-and-forth which played out across multiple motions.
