The Service ended their financial year with a surplus of $826,943, which a report presented to council on June 22nd recommended should be given entirely back to the Peterborough Police Service (PPS).
Typically, any surplus the PPS run at the end of their budget year is divided equally between the Service and the City. A letter from the Police Service Board asks to appropriate the entire surplus this year to contribute to reserve funding, keep up with pay equity obligations, and replace radios they say are coming to the end of their workable life.
Mayor Jeff Leal, who also sits on the Police Service Board, expressed support for returning the entire surplus.
Meanwhile, Councillor Alex Bierk spoke out against returning the surplus to the PPS and attempted to defer the decision.
